about

Primitivist draws on the sounds, machines, and techniques that shaped electronic music from dub, electro, ambient, acid house, hardcore, jungle, and beyond. This is not about nostalgia – the starting point is that these sounds have more to give. From dusty hardware samplers to dubbed out echoes, grungy beats to sparse ambient melodies, this is forward looking music that knows its roots.

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Anders Ingram makes his Precog debut with his PRIMITIVIST project inspired by the roots of modern electronic music from dub and ambient to house, electro, hardcore, jungle and beyond. In his own words “This is not about nostalgia. When I listen to these genres I’m always struck by the originality and inventiveness, and while production techniques have moved on some of that off the hook spontaneity feels rare in current EDM.”

Previous projects include hip-hop collective Burning Bright in collaboration with mc Tickle and dj Symatic with four Eps released on Black Lantern and This Is Not Pop, as well as djing, and releasing and performing pre-war acoustic blues and jazz under his own name.

Repeating patterns is made with a combination of old and new techniques. Sequencing is done via Ableton – using the clip screen and triggering variations using probability and randomness. This drives hardware synths and samplers which are all routed into an analogue desk. I did all the arrangements on the fly mixing elements and fx to create tracks. There was very minimal editing; I just did lots of takes and practice until I could capture the tracks I wanted.

Key elements of the sound are the Akai S1000 sampler, a range of analogue synths and old 90s Romplers, spring reverb and a tape delay, as well as the Proco RAT distortion! Really the sound comes from the dub mixing techniques pioneered by legends like King Tubby, Scientist, Mad Professor etc.
